There was late heartbreak for Killie's Development Squad as they went down 1-0 to Stephen Craigan's Motherwell at Rugby Park.

New manager Steve Clarke was able to watch some first team players in action for the first time with Lee Erwin and Eamonn Brophy paired in attack while Scott Boyd came into the heart of the defence beside Dan Higgins.

Chris Burke also started and he created Killie's best early chance, swinging in a corner only to see Scott Boyd's header tipped over the bar by Peter Morrison.

Home goalkeeper Curtis Lyle was in excellent form, pulling off a number of impressive saves to twice deny James Scott as well as Alfredo Agyeman.

Killie looked better for their added experience with Dan Higgins next to test the visiting goalkeeper. He was forced into another save from Calum Waters' ambitious effort from distance.

Substitutions disrupted the flow of the match as the second half wore on as the game seemed to be heading for a draw.

A slip in the Motherwell defence presented Brophy with the chance to win the game but he could only turn his shot wide.

And in a cruel twist for the hosts, Shaun Bowers found enough space to prod the ball towards goal and Agyeman was able to stab it past Lyle for an injury-time winner.
