Partick Thistle 0-1 Kilmarnock: Findlay's Firhill magic

in Match Reports April 7, 2018

Stuart Findlay's header provided a magical day at Firhill as Killie's unbeaten league run was extended to ten matches.

The central defender capitalised on quick thinking from Jordan Jones, as he netted a powerful first-half header to hand Killie a 1-0 triumph in Maryhill.

Over 1660 Killie fans sang, roared and encouraged their team over the line during tough second half conditions on a heavy pitch as the league's bottom side failed to find a way past Jamie MacDonald.

Kirk Broadfoot returned from suspension to partner Findlay in the heart of the Killie defence with Youssouf Mulumbu and Jordan Jones coming back with Scott Boyd, Rory McKenzie and Eamonn Brophy all on the bench.

Jones' pace proved to be Killie real weapon in the first 45 minutes, forcing Christie Elliott back and starting a number of good attacks.

Mulumbu's great through ball played Jones in on goal with Thistle keeper Ryan Scully out to block the attack but the ball fell to Kris Boyd, who would have scored but for a late clearance by Elliott.

Killie wouldn't be denied and when Erwin was pushed in the back, a quick free-kick saw Jones stand the ball up for Findlay to direct his powerful header past the helpless Thistle stopper.

Alan Archibald's men came into the match on the back of a 4-0 loss to Ross County and they reacted quickly at the start of the second half with MacDonald twice denying Sammon.

The second opportunity saw the Killie keeper rush out quickly to smother the danger as the hosts tried desperately to get back into the match.

Killie settled after that flurry of action with Mulumbu seeing his shot blocked but Thistle were enjoying the majority of possession without threatening too much.

Findlay and Broadfoot both produced well-timed blocks as the match wore on but with the help of the away support, the team stood strong and took all three points back to Ayrshire.
