Kris Boyd was the hat-trick hero as Killie came from behind to secure a 4-2 win over Dumbarton.
The striker came off the bench to inspire the Scottish Premiership men to a crucial victory after League 1 Dumbarton had twice threatened to cause an upset.
Scotland internationals Stephen O'Donnell and Greg Taylor were restored to the starting line up following their summer exertions but Taylor's afternoon was to be cut short with a horrible head knock.
The full-back bashed heads with Stuart Findlay and both players were forced off and required stitches although thankfully neither suffered concussion.
Scott Boyd and Jordan Jones were introduced with Killie switching to a back three for the remainder of the game.
Having dominated the ball, the visitors found themselves behind when Craig Barr got ahead of Kirk Broadfoot to head home he opening goal after 41 minutes.
A large travelling support got something to cheer just after the interval as Mikael Ndjoli was alert to score his first Killie goal, angling a shot into the corner of the net.
However another set back saw Dumbarton retake the lead as Bobby Barr found himself in space in the middle of the penalty area and he dispatched the ball past Jamie MacDonald.
Kris Boyd replaced Lee Erwin with 22 minutes remaining but last season's Scottish Premiership top scorer certainly made his mark in that time.
A defensive lapse allowed a long ball to drift into Boyd's path and he turned to give Grant Adam no chance in the home goal.
Killie were now on the front foot and Boyd was able to head home Chris Burke's corner from the centre of the goal.
Dumbarton were desperately trying to find a way back into the match but they were undone as a loose pass put Boyd in a foot race and he showed trademark composure to sent the ball past Adam to complete his hat-trick.
Attention now turns to Tuesday's trip to face Spartans before our final group game against Queen's Park.
