Kilmarnock 2-0 St Johnstone: Ndjoli's stunner lights up opener

in Match Reports August 4, 2018

Kilmarnock secured our first opening day league win since 2009 after a 2-0 victory against St Johnstone.

Scott Boyd grabbed our first league goal of the campaign before a Mikael Ndjoli stunner dealed victory at Rugby Park.

Steve Clarke stuck with much of the same side which beat Queen's Park with Jordan Jones coming into the side.

Neither side were able to create much in the opening half hour with Erwin dropping deep to try and create chances.

Alan Power stung the palms of Zander Clark with a fine shot from just outside the penalty area as the hosts probed for a goal.

Killie remained patient and turned on the style right at the start of the second period.

Jordan Jones was the catalyst, getting on the ball and driving at Aaron Comrie to lift the crowd and Steve Clarke's men progressed from there.

Jones tested the Saints goalkeeper once more with the visitors struggling to find a successful outball.

The breakthrough came just before the hour mark. A free kick routine between Chris Burke and Jones fed Lee Erwin who dug out a shot well.

Zander Clark could only fumble the ball and Scott Boyd was on hand to turn the ball home and become the season's opening league scorer.

Mikael Ndjoli and Iain Wilson were introduced to the action and they were to make their mark.

Ndjoli moved forward at pace with the Saints defence backtracking and the on-loan Bournemouth man fired a sublime shot into the top corner to the delight of the Killie crowd.

Eamonn Brophy and Gary Dicker both came close to putting extra gloss on the score board but it was a good day for Killie.

Kilmarnock: MacDonald; O'Donnell, Broadfoot, S.Boyd, Taylor; Power, Dicker, Burke (I.Wilson), Jones, Erwin (Ndjoli), K.Boyd (Brophy)

Attendance: 4,644
