Rugby Park was filled with legends as Kris Boyd hit a hat-trick as Kilmarnock Heroes XI beat Rangers Euro XI 6-3 in his Testimonial Match.A crowd of 4,302 saw our club captain put on another great display of goal scoring with the proceeds from the day going to charities of Kris’ choice at the end of his testimonial year.
Fans flocked to pay tribute to our number nine, who has hit 135 goals for Killie over three spells since his debut in May 2001.
A number of Killie legends made their Rugby Park returns with Alexei Eremenko and Manuel Pascali proving especially popular among fans.
The main man hit three of Killie’s goals with current players Greg Stewart and Jack Byrne on target as well as our community engagement manager Paul Di Giacomo. Rangers’ goals came through Peter Lovenkrands, youth prospect Andy Dallas and a penalty from Nacho Novo.
Eremenko expressed his joy at being back in Ayrshire, saying: “It was great to be back at Rugby Park and I’m delighted to be here to support Kris.
“We became very good friends when I played at the club and I felt really honoured that he asked me to come back and play in his game.”
Manuel Pascali was touched by the warm welcome he received as he returned to Scotland.
He added: “I’m so excited to be back in my second home. I wandered around when I got here on Friday night and just felt so happy to be back at Rugby Park.
“I’m delighted to be here to support Kris, he’s been a great servant of the club and he deserved to have a great testimonial. It was brilliant to be back with Boydy and Eremenko it felt just like old times. Killie will always have a place in our hearts, so it was a really great day.”
There was a real family feel to the day with plenty of fun and good football on show.
The testimonial committee would like to thank QTS, the Park Hotel, Kilmarnock FC, Rangers FC, the referees, Police Scotland, Hummel, Just Sport (Nike), Scottish Ambulance, St. Andrews First Aid, Bluefin and all the staff who donated their time on the day.
