Two goals from Kris Boyd, and almost total possession from Kilmarnock, gave the visitors a comfortable afternoon in the borders. That comfort was curtailed though, by a rainstorm of almost biblical proportions, as the whole game was played in a downpour that would have been more appropriate to the Amazon than to Annan. Killie’s kit man must have been considering Scuba equipment.

Kris Boyd showed that he was in the mood from the start, with an early shot being deflected away for a corner, and then a header from a Burke cross going just over. In seven minutes though he opened his account with a tidy finish from a Dom Thomas low cross, picking a spot in the net low to Atkinson’s right, from seven yards. Killie continued to dominate, with the back four of O’Donnell, Broadfoot, Wilson and Taylor knocking the ball back and forward between each other as they tried to create spaces in Annan’s defensive formation, Frizzell, Burke and McKenzie doing the heavy lifting in midfield, Thomas and Jones working the flanks, and Boyd spearheading Kilmarnock’s attacks. That front three all had several shots saved or blocked throughout the first half, whilst for Annan, in a rare foray forward, Moxon had a shot go over.

The second half continued the pattern. Boyd did miss a decent opportunity early in the half, but got his second after 61 minutes with a clever change of feet, before stroking the ball with his left inside Atkinson’s right hand post. Frizzell had a couple of shots go wide, and MacDonald had to make his only save from Omar late in the game, but the result was never in doubt, as Killie ran out comfortable winners.

Lee McCulloch thought his side was dominant all through the game. “"If I was ultra critical, we could have had one or two more goals, we had the bulk of possession, created the better chances, and had nothing really to scare us. I'm delighted with the way we played, delighted with how we passed the ball.” When asked about Kris Boyd, he said “"He's been written off at every opportunity, because he's a little bit more high profile than most, but when you have the finishing ability he has, the stats to back it up, and the goals he has, you can't write a guy like that off. Even when he's not scoring, and people focus on what he is not doing, I focus on what he is doing. He is always talking and organising, and is very motivational.” Lee also complemented Annan Athletic Football Club for their welcome today, and for ensuring the game went ahead in very difficult conditions.
