Aberdeen 1-1 Kilmarnock: Jones strikes to earn Pittodrie point

in Match Reports September 16, 2017

Kilmarnock claimed a deserved point at Pittodrie thanks to a goal from Jordan Jones.

The winger curled the ball past Joe Lewis minutes after the interval to send the 161 travelling supporters home happy.

Calum Waters was handed his first Premiership start in midfield with Iain Wilson forming part of a five-man defence.

Aberdeen took the lead after 10 minutes when Graeme Shinnie’s driven ball found Stevie May, who lashed the ball past Jamie MacDonald.

An injury to Wilson saw a formation change to 4-2-3-1 with Dean Hawkshaw introduced into the action. After the hosts’ bright start, Killie grew in confidence with Jones in particular causing problems with his direct running from deep.

Having ended the first period on top Killie flew out the traps and found the equaliser thanks to a fine passing move. Some quick touches saw the ball fall to Jones who saw his shot fly over Lewis and into the net.

Ryan Christie and Gary Mackay-Steven were introduced as the Reds pushed to retake the lead but McCulloch’s men remained disciplined and a constant threat on the break.

Both sides traded chances in a frenetic finish but Killie stood firm to return to Ayrshire with a share of the spoils.
