Killie boss takes heart from display after cup loss

Steve Clarke was largely satisfied with the way his Kilmarnock team performed despite slipping to a 3-1 defeat to Rangers in the Betfred Cup.

A hat-trick from Alfredo Morelos proved enough to end Killie's League Cup hopes for the season after a spirited second-half comeback from the hosts.

Wes Foderingham in the Rangers goal pulled off two excellent saves to deny Chris Burke and Clarke saw many positive aspects from the way his team competed with Steven Gerrard's Light Blues.

He said: "We had chances to be in front, we hit the bar twice and their keeper made an unbelievable save.

"I thought we played well, with one little caveat. We didn't defend too well in some instances."

Dan Bachmann was handed his Killie debut in goal and Clarke was pleased with how the Austrian international performed.

He added: "I thought he did ok and made some good saves. It’s good to have two keepers competing for the number one jersey."
