Billy Brown Column 21.10.2009

I finished a touchline ban on Saturday.I don't want another one so wont be saying much about the penalty that denied Kilmarnock a hard-earned point at Easter Road.
I will restrict my comment to this:If Craig Thomson watched the highlights of our match against Hibs on BBC1 on Monday night and still thinks it was a spot-kick, the Daily Record wouldn't have been able to print my response anyway.
We can't do anything about it now but Gavin Skelton, who was judged to have committed the foul, was inconsolable at the end of the match.
He knew he hadn't touched Abdessalam Benjelloun and there is genuinely not a more honest player in the game.
If Gavin had been guilty he would have been in that dressing room apologising to his mates.Instead, he was just gutted and so were the rest of the boys.
I watched the game from the stand and although we were the better team in the first half there's no doubt Hibs upped their performance after the break and were impressive.
But our boys worked their backsides off and were six minutes from getting their reward when it was taken away from them. It's not only the Hibs team who impressed me at the weekend.
I was also struck by the back-up system Yogi Hughes has in place. He's got Brian Rice alongside him, who is a terrific lad, but there is a full backroom team to help them.
At Kilmarnock, Jim Jefferies and I just have to get on with it.Without the excellent Gary Locke I now have to take every training session and warm-up routine before a match.
One of the advantages of my touchline ban, as far as the lads are concerned, was that I wasn't allowed on the pitch to put them through their paces before games but I'll be back in business when St Johnstone come calling at our place.
I'm looking forward to that one because Saint's have been a great addition to the SPL and by all accounts should have beaten Rangers on Saturday.
Talking to the Hibs boys after our game, they said Derek McInnes' team are the best they've played this season so we know it will be tough.
Dogged
We have to start scoring goals, it's as simple as that.
We've only netted six in the league and three of them were in the first game of the season so we need to start converting the chances we are creating - especially as we are doing well at the back, having only conceded eight in the SPL.
If we can rectify that situation it would make an enormous difference. And hopefully we took a step towards that goal - no pun intended - yesterday when Mark Burchill and Alan Russell played in a bounce game for us at the Hibs training ground.
Mark has yet to play a competitive match for Killie while Alan's career here has been dogged by injury but both these lads know they have more goals in them.
Hopefully we'll get them up and running and Killie can reap the benefit. We've got good players at this club and they are giving it their all.
We need a break or two so hopefully we'll start getting them at the weekend.
As told to David McCarthy
